- Web Browsers (for web functions such as The Mobile Tech)
- Internet Explorer 7 (Windows Desktops)
- Internet Explorer Mobile (Windows Mobile 6)
- Safari 3.1.2 (Mac/Windows Desktops)
- Mobile Safari (iPhone/iPod Touch)
- Firefox 3 (Windows/Mac Desktops)
- Opera 9.5 (Windows/Mac Destkops)
- Opera Mini 4.1 (Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry*)
- *Note that Opera Mini must be used for Blackberry - the native Blackberry browser is known to be incompatible.
- For all browsers, Javascript and cookies must be enabled.
- Email Programs
- Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Apple Mail, Entourage
- Some other email programs, such as Eudora or Thunderbird may work, if they are properly configured as the default email program on your system
- We do not support browser-based email (i.e. email that you use Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari to check). Most of the services which provide this type of email (Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail, etc.) also provide a way for you to configure one of the above programs (Outlook, etc.) to work with their services.
- Host Platform
- FileMaker Server/Server Advanced 11 on the server
- FileMaker Pro/Pro Advanced 11 on each workstation
- FileMaker Go 1.2 on each tablet or handheld device
- We can get this for you at setup time
- For the Server
- See official specs at www.filemaker.com/products/fms/tech_specs.html
- Important to note: those are minimum specs to run a basic, less-than-optimal installation of our host server software.
- As of March 2011, our current required server configuration is:
- 2.5 GHz Xeon Processor
- 4 GB 1.3GHz RAM
- Hardware-based RAID 1
- 3 Disk HD configuration: System, Data, Backup (7200 RPM or faster preferred for the Data drive)
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Gigabit Ethernet
- Redundant Power Supply
- Critically important: this server computer must not also be used as a workstation, file server, print server, email server, or terminal server.
- We also strongly recommend:
- An uninterruptible power supply for the server, which has the ability to be connected via USB/serial to the server and is "intelligent" - it should be able to trigger a script when its battery power reaches a certain level.
- A tape drive or other backup mechanism which produces backups on media that can be stored offsite. Online backup services such as Carbonite can work well for this, too, and we offer configuration services for offline backup.
- We strongly advise against using virtual servers.
- It is strongly recommended that this server be used only for serving your RSW (and other FMP) systems.
- The server's IP address must be fixed (i.e., not provided by DHCP).
- If you are using our web-enabled services (strongly recommended), you must have a working web server, either IIS (Windows) or Apache (Mac). This may be on the same server as FMS depending on the size of your organization and the amount of web traffice expected. We will discuss this with you as we plan for setup.
- For Workstations
- See official (minimum) specs at www.filemaker.com/products/fmp/tech_specs.html
- We also strongly recommend:
- At least 2GB RAM (more is always better)
- "Always On" network access to the Server
- DHCP-provided addresses are OK for workstations
- Good-quality graphics cards with at least 128M video RAM
- Video resolution of at least 1024 x 768
- Some screens (such as reports that include charts and most "help" screens) require "always-on" internet access
- For Tablets & Handhelds
- iOS 4.3 (Android not currently supported)
- iPad 2, iPhone 4, or 4th Generation (Sept. 2010) iPod Touch Recommended
- For the Network
- TCP/IP must be supported
- LANS should be at least 100Mbps
- If you have multiple sites, site-to-site communication should be at T1 speeds or better (1.5Mbps, ideally in both directions)
- A fixed IP address from your internet service provider, or a router that supports Dynamic DNS
- TCP Ports 5003, 16000, and 16001 must be forwarded to the server at the router level
- Certain other ports will need to be opened at the router level in order for us to provide remote support, and also to enable any web features you are using. We will discuss these with you as we prepare for setup. All of these ports must be open and available to us at least 7 days before your system goes live.
- For Printers
- General
- Printers must not be shared from workstations. Any printers that are to be used by more than one person must be on network print servers. These printers should have the same name (e.g., "SalesLaser1," etc.) on all systems that use them.
- We strongly advise laser printers instead of inkjet printers. Laser printers typically print several times faster than inkjet printers (and also save significantly on toner costs in the long run).
- For day-to-day use, monochrome (not color) printers will outperform color printers. Color printers are OK for printing price tags, brochures, etc., but for higher volume print jobs, such as sales orders, we strongly recommend monochrome laser printers.
- Barcode Labels
- Dymo label printer(s), with label #30324 (diskette) installed and set up as the default size.
- If only one workstation in each location will be receiving inventory, and if your barcode scanner (below) is sync'ing via a direct cable connection (instead of syncing via WiFi), it's OK to connect this Dymo directly to the same workstation as the scanner (below). If more than one computer will ever receive inventory, or if you are syncing the scanner via WiFi, we recommend using a print server for the Dymo.
- If more than one workstation will be printing labels, the label printer must have the same name on all workstations that use it.
- We will work with you at the time of installation to customize label printing for each location.
- Barcode Scanners
- For receiving & taking inventory:
- Must be PDA's, with the latest versions of either Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Blackberry OS, Android, or iOS.
- Recommended model for 1D laser-based scanning is the Dell Unitech PA500 (we can order these for you)
- Other PDA's, which have barcode scanning attachments, may also be used, as long as they use the latest versions of either Windows Mobile or Palm OS.
- An example of a scanning attachment that may work with standard smartphones/pda's is the Socket SDSC device, which plugs into your phone's SD Card slot.
- At this time, if you are using an Android, RIM (Blackberry) or iOS (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) device for receiving & cycle counts, you will need a Bluetooth scanner which can operate in "HID" mode to enter data into web forms as though it was a keyboard. The Scanfob 2002 has been tested to work very well for this.
- For point of sale:
- Any USB scanner which is capable of reading Code 39 and other modern barcodes and sending the information to the host computer in a keyboard emulation style. Lower cost examples include:
- Unitech MS180/MS210
- ID Tech EconoScan/VersaScan
- POS-X Xi1000
